Just like the weather, we've had a lot going on lately at School of Rock Silver Spring
It's Show Time for the Fall 2023 Performance Program!
Our Fall 2024 Season is coming to an end. You have two opportunities to see all the students' hard work on display. First up is Sunday, February 4th at Pearl Street Warehouse in Washington, DC from noon to 7pm and then again on Sunday, February 11th at The Filling Station at El Rey in Arlington, VA from 11am - 6pm.
We are very proud of all the effort our students have put in to this season tackling some difficult material. With a set that includes The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Soundgarden and the bands that made CBGB the club to visit in NYC in the late 70s and early 80s, we are confident that these shows are gonna make you wanna pogo, mosh, show off your moves like Jagger and get some R-E-S-P-E-C-T on the dance floor.

We are currently seeking those interested in taking your playing to the next level for a class beginning in March! Contact us at silverspring@schoolofrock.com.
House Band Happenings
Jamtacular!
The School of Rock Silver Spring House Band loves any opportunity to play with our sister schools in Ashburn, VA and Vienna, VA. So we thought a shared gig would be a great way to start off the new year. We expanded this idea saying, the more the merrier by inviting 3 other DMV area House Bands to join in on the fun as well. The event dubbed Jamtacular took place on January 13th. This was a great way for our students to meet other bands, hang out, jam and enjoy a full day of rock and roll! We are so glad we could connect with the SOR community on a larger scale and are delighted to make it an annual event!
IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START THINKING ABOUT SUMMER
Our week long Summer Camp experiences are now available for purchase online. They can fill up fast so don't miss out. Our camp are a ton of fun for kids aged 7-17 and are a great introduction to our year round group programs if your student is thinking of joining but wants to dip their toe in before making the plunge. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out.
Warm Welcome to our new Keys Instructor
JennaRose
In Jaunary we welcomed JennaRose Sexton to the SOR team. She started music lessons at a young age, learning piano for about 10 years and participated in a number of competitions throughout the years. She continued her musical education on her own, learning several other instruments, including fiddle, bass, guitar, and mandolin.
JennaRose comes to us from Nebraska where she was playing music (she played fiddle for a couple of bands) and was giving kids lessons with horses. A multi-instrumentalist, she will primarily be teaching keys at School of Rock in Silver Spring.

Hannah L.
Hannah started lessons with School of Rock in March of last year. Fairly quickly they were able to join a Rock 101 Lab class and within a few months were signing up for their first Performance Program show. After gaining confidence on the stage in the Joan Jet vs. Pat Benatar show last season, we are excited to see them in the Soundgarden shows this month and can't wait to see what is up next for them.
How many performance seasons have you been in at SOR Silver Spring?
Two. My first show was Joan Jett vs. Pat Benatar and now Soundgarden
Have you signed up for Spring yet?
Yes, my first choice was Emo and my second choice was Iron Maiden [vs. Judas Priest]
What made you want to play guitar?
There was this one Green Day song that I wanted to learn so I learned it and after that I just started practicing every day.
Are you interested in other instruments?
Possibly Bass guitar.
What are your musical influences, favorite bands or artists?
My favorite band is Radiohead and also Green Day maybe and also Blink-182.
What advice do you have for new students?
Don't be afraid, if you have a solo that you maybe don't know completely for rehearsal just try it, don't just just not play. If you mess up its ok.
What do you like most about SOR?
Probably the people. I like hanging out with other students here.
IS THAT SNOW?
INCLEMENT WEATHER
We do not follow area school closures. On the day in question, we will determine if our staff can come in and return home safely, particularly for groups. Often the timing of the storm allows us to continue our in person operations. If you feel the roads are not safe, you may opt to take your lesson online for that day, just let us know. We will post on our social media pages if we are moving online and send an email if there are changes to the in person lessons or groups on that day. If you have a question, email us, check our programs site, social media, or give us a call before you head out.
NOTES FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
with Music Director Brooks Owens
BETTER TOGETHER - As we wrap up a season of the Performance Program and begin another, it’s a good time to think about the big “why” behind our group programs. Why is it better to play in a band than to just play by yourself? The first reason is motivation to practice. You’re way more likely to practice and get better when you have an upcoming rehearsal or gig, and being accountable to your bandmates makes you a better musician! Second, there are so many lessons to learn about being a musician that you can’t learn as a solo act. Bands teach and reinforce teamwork, collaboration, and social skills. Finally, the third and most important reason to play in a band is that it’s more fun! Nothing is more fun than plugging in and jamming with your friends, and life is better when we rock out together!
Welcome to new rockers joining us!
Alex K., Alvaro L-G., Anya S., Ash P., Avrohom S., Bo W., Calvin O-O., Doreen C., Elijah T., Lilly H.B., Oak S-A., Olivia W., Peter K. Philip B., Satya I., Vivian C.
Rookies - Amelia M., Daisy R., Joseph E., Linus W., Tyson L. and Ugo A.
My kids love their lessons, the space itself is welcoming to kids who don't necessarily fit in with the "normal" kids at school, and the option of playing in a band is fab!
